Code of Conduct

The Entomological Society of British Columbia strives to promote, facilitate, communicate and advocate for research and education on insects and their relatives, mentor the development of younger entomologists, and showcase British Columbia’s entomological expertise locally and nationally. In accordance with this purpose, the society requires that members, and particularly volunteers, trustees, and Executive committee members representing the Society:

  • Treat all people with kindness, respect and consideration
  • Communicate openly and with respect for others
  • Use positive communication skills such as constructive criticism; specific, actionable feedback; and focusing on the idea or situation rather than the person
  • Endeavor to uphold the highest standards of truthfulness and honesty in all scientific and professional endeavors
  • Strive to acknowledge the differences in the lived experiences of all of our members, and work to challenge stereotypes and assumptions made within and outside ourselves
  • Commit to continual learning on how to best treat each other

Personal attacks, discrimination, harassment, or abusive language or behaviours will not be tolerated under any circumstances. An individual’s failure to follow these guidelines may result in investigation by the Executive committee and member discipline (e.g., dismissal from the society).

To report a violation of this Code the President of the Society should be contacted. If the President is the subject of the complaint, the First Vice-President or Past President should be contacted. If none of these are appropriate, a complainant should contact the ESBC Secretary to identify an Executive committee member to whom the report can be made.
